Pins and Needles Toes: Sciatica, Circulatory or Other Condition?

Every now and then, for no apparent reason (emphasis on "apparent"), I feel an annoying, painful, pins and needles sensation in my big toe. It's usually only one toe, usually my left big toe, that gets this.

Doing a search online, I found all sorts of possibilities. But, I really didn't fit any of the symptoms. My symptoms are momentary, sudden, annoying and painful. Of the possible causes, a lower back problem fit the best.

Has anyone ever felt anything like this? Did you consult a chiropractor or neurologist? Which helped?

There is a good chance that you have a neuroma which is a tumor of the nerve. I just posted something on neuroma on my blog http://womensfoothealth.blogspot.com/ for more information.

If you need to find a podiatrist, visit http://apma.org/ and search by zip code.

Don't wait too long - foot pain is NEVER normal and often harder to cure when left untreated.

Dr. Reid,

Thanks so much for your response and the helpful links. Just the reminder that "foot pain is NEVER normal" will certainly encourage some women to find a doctor and ask for help. For those who are interested, Dr. Reid is a podiatric physician and surgeon in private practice in Naperville, IL at Family Podiatry Center and a spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA).

help me get the right diagnosis, i'm sorry to hear about your pain. Can you go back to the doctor who did your initial surgery? Although they admitted to cutting too deeply, I think they should perhaps make a recommendation on how to have the situation remedied. what area of the country are you in?

It started with sever pelvic pain a couple of montha after having my appendix removed, but immediatly after the surgery, they told me that they cut too deep. Instantly noticed that right under the scar where they cut me, my bowles seemed to buldge, now I have had constant dirarreha for several months, they said I have colitis, and am going for a colonoscopy next week. but a couple of months ago this severe very low pelvic pain began, then I started getting pain in the groin area, then burning and tingling spots all the way down both of my legs, now its not just tingling, and burning, it is very painfull and I cannot walk but for a few minutes, and my legs get so weak that I sometimes just have to sit down no matter where I am at. Then the pelvic pain increases. This is so severe I do not walk more than I have to, and even then it is very difficult, I don't know what doc to see about this, it feels as if the blood flow to my legs is blocked.

The exact Same symptoms begin with me, i was then diagnosed with gout. some people experience gout in many different ways. Most believe that it is only in your toes, which is where mine began. Mine went undiagnosed for so long that I now how extremely painful crystal deposits in all of my joint. Gout is a simply diagnosis, however it is often mistaken for nerve, or arthritis problems. Gout, is too much uric acid in the kidneys. I'm not sure why. If the kidney just don't excrete it properly, or what. But I do know that in my case, yes it does seem as if it a nerve problem, which esentially it is, but most of the time nerve problems or pins and needle feeling, are caused by an underlying issue that is causing inflammation for one reason or another. I would strongly recommend having your kidneys tested for too much uric acid. These uric acid crystals will cause kidney stones,( which by the way are transparent , and do not show up on most x-rays or scans, but once they are passed they can tell you what kind they are) and these stones somehow also deposit into your joints, if this is the problem you need to have it taken care of soon before it spreads to your other joints.

Nail on the head..... Sounds exactly like what I experience. I do and have had lower back pain for a long time. I am a long distance cyclists and a couple of years ago had the nerves in my toes go completely numb on the three toes between the big toe and little toe. They never have fully recovered. Lots of numbness in that area 24/7.
