Q:

Really Late Period

Hello, I am currently on cycle day 40 of my period and very confused. I am trying to get pregnant, so we have been having sex with that intention. Here is a bit about my history:
I quit taking the pill June 15. Had a pill-induced period for 5 days. Then, 16 days later, I had another period. Then I went 25 days and had another period. That period began on July 27th. Since then, I have not had a period. I experienced a week of cramping on and off during cycle days 20-25 so I assumed I was having my period either early, or having really early PMS. So far, no period has happened. I had a small amount of pinkish blood after sex, that didn't even show up anywhere but in the fluids after sex. I didn't see it again after that. That was on cycle day 32. I had a negative urine HPT test on Cycle day 38. Now it is cycle day 40. I have no symptoms of period but have been really emotional. That could be to any number of outside stresses, so I don't want to just jump in and attribute it to something else. At this point, I am starting to worry. I don't know if I should keep up with the pregnancy tests, or wonder if something is just wrong with me. I keep being told that it takes some time off of the pill, but most people say 2-3 months. I have now been off for 3 months. Could I be pregnant? or is there something else that could be wrong with me? I am really frustrated and starting to worry. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

If your last period was July 27th, then you have only missed one period (around August 27th), correct? Today is September 5th, so your period may just be delayed or you may miss a period. Both can be completely normal.

If you are not having any symptoms (such as pain), then you may just have a late or missed period. I know how frustrating it can be, since you are trying to conceive and are tracking your periods and the calendar. Some women do miss an entire period, and it is not an indication of any medical condition.

You have a few options:
1. Continue to wait for another week, to see if your period begins. You are now about 8 days late for your period, and this can be common (even without pregnancy or medical condition).
2. If you do experience any symptoms, call your doctor to ask
3. Your cycles may still be adjusting to being without synthetic hormones (unlikely, but possible) since it has been 2.5 months since you last took your birth control pill.
4. You can always call your OB/GYN and ask a nurse if you are worried about not having a period, and trying to conceive. They may want to see you for an in-clinic pregnancy test (blood test).

I hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
