Q:

Why does even 5 minutes of sun cause headache - and 10 mins cause nausea?

My husband gets a pretty severe headache when in the sun for only 4-5 minutes, sometimes even with a baseball cap on but definitely when he is hatless. Today he was outside for about 4 minutes for a fire drill at work and his headache formed in 4 minutes of sun exposure.

20 or more minutes causes nausea and an hour, even with a baseball cap, can cause vomiting. Our summers are pretty hot and sunny (yay for me, nay for him!). I am wondering why this extreme reaction to sun happens? He did not grow up in a place with hot summers but I didn't either and I don't have this problem.

Anyone have any ideas?

Try wearing Polariad Glasses. I too suffer with same problem but if I wear Rayban's Polariod Glasses I don't get those headaches when I go out in sun.

My doc says it's optical nerve related - kinda like a nerve spasm but somewhere in the optical nerve path. I sometimes wear dark polarized goggles like what swimmers wear. I never get a headache wearing those.

Do I look fashionable? Heck yes. At my age? LoL. It's nothing to do with sunlight on my skin.

In case it helps someone here, I just wanted to add that there are lots of medications that can cause a bad reaction when someone is exposed to sun.

There are a few things that can reduce your headaches and I have used this and it does work.
OK first you need to get some magnisum tabs and take them look it up, then there is the vitamin D issues you can look that up as well, then there is another thing that I just learned about. Iodine, years in the past it was said that iodine was bad for you and so many of the worlds people are iodine deficant. Look into that as well. These are some good avenues to look down if you are serious about research. Just som ideas I like the magnisim. I use it just to keep my headaches away period. headache are so dibilitating you can not function with a headache or migrain. you cant even open your eyes sometimes without geting nausous. Good luck I need it too

I can totally relate to your husband, WOW this is what happens to me: When I go out in the sun for more than 8 minutes I start getting headaches mostely on my left side, If I do not find shade at that point I am in trouble. My cognitive thinking starts to disapate, as I hear me talking right on the reverse end no one can understand me, My words get slirred. I am slow at thinking of what to say and then the vomitting occurs, Mostly I run to the shade as it starts because it also can make me weak and need to lay down and get some sleep. It scares me now and the Doc an not tell me why this is happening to me. I thought it was because my last two children I had toximia with them and they were 10 years a part. but Iffin yur husband is going through the same symptoms as myself than I fear now it has nothing to do with toximia HMMM back to the drawing board. And it is not that I am dehydrated either cause that was checked out. Now it is a fobia for me to go somewhere where I may get coaught in the sun. It makes it hard for me with my kids, not being able to walk them around or play with them outside.
The only meds I take is Ibuprofen for my broken back dislocated hip and no right collor bone. I also can not take pain meds, and or tylonal or asprin, I can not drink alcohol 4 sips of a beer and I am feeling it and can not dring anymore. What is wrong with me. I am a plant conisoure and I love the outdoors but bringing an umbrella where ever I go is sad, I have to wait til the sun goes down before I can do anything. Im scared that I may not come out of these issues when I get into them. Like will i stay like this with slow cognative thinking and slow reactions. I am a college graduate of business and Marketing Smart by night but slow during the day. and no really my favorite spice is garlic lol

I had the same problem today. As a physically fit, healthy indivual. I went outside to return a Tv to Salvation army, the whole thing only lasted a few minutes. I DID drink water. When I got home, I had nausia and a bad headache. I passed out from the pain and doze off to sleep.

For the people that never experienced this and are telling us to wear sunglasses or a hat. That's an obvious shortcut answer, but QONT solve the problem. It never ever happened to me before.

Maby part of the problem was I went out Right after waking up. But I have done this before and didn't have the problem.
There must be an answer somewhere, now y'all excuse me while I go shoot my Singing neighbor, that is making it Worse. Peace, and I hope you guys find a solution.

My wife has a similar problem.., she gets headache when she goes out in bright sun light. Initially we thought it was due to dehydration, but she has a good intake of water. She also has high sensitivity to bright lights. I am planning to getting her a very good sun glasses so next time she is out it does not recur.

And as someone said a few posts ago about it not being a heat thing kind of prove my it is a heat thing.. that was my point in saying it might not be just a sun thing. If my head is hot now matter the temp, I get sick. I was reading in an air conditioned room and the heat from the awful reading light above my head started making me sick. If it is hot out and I can get my head wet and in the shade I can be okay. Your posts added to my suspicions.. it is something with the body not being able to cool the head properly. Just seems my head is extra sensitive to the heat. I realized the water thing when I was at a car wash once as a teen. I started getting sick (even in the shade) and someone sprayed me and I started feeling a bit better. I kept my head wet the rest of the time and didn't not end up sick. The water cooled my head. Swimming in the sun as long as my head is wet works too. Otherwise I can't be out in the heat unfortunately.

The sunglasses may be of help to you (and I truly hope they are) but I don't think that is the issue with the majority here. It seems to be more with not being able to cool the head down properly. It is just amazing how fast heat on the head can cause a major problem! I don't wear prescription glasses daily, but I do for driving. For you it may be a eye sensitivity but as I said I don't think it is with the majority here. I do wear sunglasses and have never noticed a difference when it comes to dealing with the heat. Don't know if I was of any help at all or not, hope so.

I posted earlier about getting an eye exam and getting new glasses. Well I still have 20 15 like I did as a child and I got a pair of Oakley sunglasses thanks to my insurance. They didn't help very much, but my boyfriend has wanted a pair for a long time so I gave them to him. He loves them and says they work great for blocking the sun, but he doesn't get sun headaches like all of us do. But while I was out with one of my girlfriends, we stopped by her new apartment and they freebies on a table. One of the the trinkets was a pair of plastic sun glasses, so I got them just for the heck of it. They seemed to help more than the oakleys. My guess is that the plastic is too think for the sun to go though like normal glass is. So that seems to back up the theory that my eyes are just too sensitive to handle the light. It seems to have gotten better since my boyfriend and I go almost everywhere together, so when the sun is to bright, I latch onto him and close my eyes so he can guide me to a building or my truck.
The person from the last 2 posts mentioned that he/she has excellent vision. This may be an explanation to the headaches that are eye/light related. As I mentioned earlier, My vision is 20 15 which is better than most, so if it only seems to happen to people with above average vision, it stands to reason that maybe because our eyes are more in-focus that they can't filter out the light. Or maybe it has something to do with the (Correct me if I mess this up) warped shape of the eyes which causes them to be out of focus in the first place. Maybe the odd shape makes it to where the light doesn't hit the back of the eye as directly as a pair of eyes that are the original shape. I hope that made some kind of sense. Anyway, if anyone could give me some feedback, positive or negative to help back up or dismiss this theory, it would be greatly appreciated.
