Experiencing breast pain not only is really awful pain but can make you get scared over it. I'm 28 years old and I experienced so much from such matter and I was told everything is normal.
For women especially in their 20's experiencing breast pain are normal and it is nothing serious at this age. At this age it is all hormonal issue. The least their could be is a cyst other than that their is nothing to be worried about. These are all 100 percent normal. If the pain bothers you take Motrin (ibuprofen) which are over counter. If you feel something to be alarmed as long as you don't feel anything hard is a good sign. What you feel from what I'm saying is a cyst. From this point make appointment with your doctor just to be sure. I'm sure he/she will tell you it's a cyst.
To reduce having cyst try limit your caffeine intake. Caffeine products cause cyst. The less the caffeine the better it is.

I'm 48 and have had moderate to severe breast pain for the past 6 years. For the past 2 years I have been bedridden, unable to work and have severe breast pain for the majority of every day. I'm taking Neurontin for leg pain, swelling and stiffness that started 8 years ago but it doesn't help with the breast pain. Ibuprofen used to help but for the last few years that doesn't help. I have seen several doctors but they have no idea what is causing the pain. The doctors usually don't even exam my breast even though I come to them mainly complaining of breast pain. I have very large breasts and the doctors seem to be "afraid" of them.
I'm having swelling in my breast along with burning pains, sharp stabbing pains and constant throbbing pain. I also have sharp stabbing pains in both underarms for the past two years. The swelling in my breast is similar to the swelling in my ankles, legs and thighs. Basically my entire body is swollen. I drink 1 1/2 to 2 gallons of water a day and urinate 15-20 times a day so I shouldn't be retaining water but for some reason I am. My breasts are so swollen that they have become extremely heavy. I think I might be in perimenopause since I haven't had a period for 4 months (and I have always been regular). The severe pain that I experience and the sensitivity in my breasts mean that I usually can't wear a bra or any clothing above the waist so I can rarely leave my home. I am so fatigued and exhausted every day that I can barely walk back and forth to the bathroom all the times that I have to go everyday. I make it to the kitchen at least once a day to eat whatever I can in 5-10 minutes before I'm so exhausted that I have to return to bed. A lot of the fatigue is probably from the Neurontin but when I have tried to stop taking it the leg pain and stiffness gets so bad that I can't walk.
Is anyone familiar with the combination of symptoms that I'm having and what the cause might be? I would appreciate some help and advice from any of the Experts. Do you know of anything that could cause the type of breast pain that I have described or what I can do to releave this pain?

Hi, I'm sorry to hear you have breast pain. I know the feeling and I've been through so much because of breast pain until I learned about breast pain matters. If you have large breasts it is really important to see a doctor because depending on situatio if you feel heaviness through your breasts it can be because muscle related.
At age 48 I'd say go see another doctor for second opinion. Explain everything be very serious about it and I'm sure he/she will help you. If you don't mind me asking are you from New York if yes I know the best doctor and he has been very helpful with me for a very long time. I'm going to see him this coming Tuesday. If your from NY let me know I'll give you his contact information.
Let me ask you this do you have any under arm pain of anykind? Any deep sharp pain to the underarms? Does your under arm get boils? Do you have loss of appetite? If you say yes to any of these I'd say go see a dermatologist right away. It is possible that you are having similar symptoms as I was having and when I saw the dermatologist he diagnosed me with a condition called hidradenitis suppurativa. The skin in the axilla gets inflamed cause infection and create boils and the whole pain can spread to the breasts and throughout the chest.
If you have such under arm problem I'd say go see a dermatologist right away. It does seem odd as I was thinking when I saw the dermatologist it's because the problem is coming from the skin. If you have such pain and problem throughout your whole breasts it is best to see another doctor for second opinion.
It is best to go the doctor right away. It shouldn't be ignored. If you want any more information of any kind let me know and I'll be glad to help and if your from NY I'll give you the contact info to the doctor I know.
Thanks,

Hi Melissa,
Thanks for your response. I'm from the Detroit area, not NY. I have gone through three "cycles" of seeing doctors about my breast pain over the past 6 years. I call them cycles because each doctors want me to take all of the same tests all over again and then after 4-6 visits they says they don't know what the cause of my breast pain could be. They check to see if I have diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and all of the most common ailments (I have never had any of these health issues) then they don't know what else to do. I'm beginning to wonder if there are any doctors out there who know how to diagnose anything other than common ailments. I am always very serious, prepared and focused during office visits but so far that hasn't helped. I have pretty good health insurance so it seems that doctors see me as a good opportunity to bill the insurance company for office visits even if they know they can't help me. I plan to start all over again in 2012 but it would be a lot easier if I had a referral to a doctor who is more experienced in diagnosing less common ailments.
I do get very sharp pains in my underarm area. It's not every day but it happens quite often. I have never had any type of boils or sores under my arms. It's hard to says if I have a loss of appetite because since I have breast pain all day, every day as well as other pain I'm numb (emotionally/mentally) almost all of the time and often go 12 or more hours without eating and I rarely feel hungry at all. I don't think this is because of a loss of appetite. I think it's because of the constant and severe pain, fatigue and stress due to my ongoing illness.
I hope that your breast and underarm pain have gone away. Thanks for writing.

Thanks for your reply. The kind of breast pain I was having all I can say about it is that thank God my doctors knew the cause of it and I'm better from all that. I've been through so much testings and worries until they knew the cause of it.
From what your explaining about feeling sharp pain under your arms doesn't sound right to be ignored. Have you been to a different doctor for second opinion? What other symptoms do you have from your breast pain and under arms? What your feeling from under your arms take my my personal advice if you like, I have a good feeling you will get better from this point. Go see a dermatologist and tell them I get very sharp pain under my arms area. I know seems strange to see a dermatologist for this matter but I have a good feeling you will start seeing relief by seeing such doctor. Having sharp pain under arms is coming from the skin.
I also was having alot of deep sharp pain under my arms it really is horrible pain I know the feeling and it caused me to have the worse possible breast pain. When I was told to see a dermatologist he diagnosed me with a condition called hidradenitis suppurativa. He told me my condition is mild. He has been so very helpful in everyway. He told me having sharp pain under arms can spread to the breast. He gave me something's by injection to my underarms and I felt all better.
I hope you take my advice and see a good dermatologist. It's a start to see some relief. I hope you see him/her real soon and I'd really like to hear how your visit goes. Good Luck there and I hope to hear from you real soon.

Thanks for the reply. I submitted my posting and I wrote a sentence in a hurry and clicked save by mistake. I wasn't done writing and I know I can't edit what I wrote.
What your saying is right and I was trying to say this before I save it.
Thanks,

Thank you for your share, Melissa.
Unfortunately, we can never say with 100% certainty that breast pain in your 20's is normal. It is likely to be caused by hormones during your menstrual cycle but unexplained breast pain that doesn't go away after your next menstrual cycle or that persists after menopause needs to be evaluated by your doctor.
Thanks again,
Rosa
