It’s Not Rejection, It’s Just Direction
I use this mantra every day. It helps to diffuse not taking everything personally. I started using this mantra when I was looking for an agent and got a ton of “great work, but no thanks” response letters. When I chose to take the perspective of: “My work must not fit in with their agenda for this year,” I was able to keep on going for it without that dreaded feeling of: “something must be wrong with me or my work.”
I remember as I opened the “no thank you” letters… before my mind even had a minute to connect to the inner critic, I would start the mantra: “It’s not rejection it’s just direction.” I would follow it up with: “If not here then where? Where is the open door? I know it’s out there I just have to tune into it.” Be a seeker and keep on knocking, perhaps on a different door, and you will find what you are looking for.
I remember memorizing a verse in college that has given me a lot of confidence when it comes to those “closed door” experiences in life. It speaks of the guidance that is available to all of us, all the time. We simply need to remove the static of our fearful emotions, doubts and worries enough to hear it: “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” Isaiah 30:21
