Type 2 diabetes is gaining on us. Almost 8 percent of the U.S. population has it and the numbers continue to swell.

"Diabetes is also associated with long-term complications that affect almost every part of the body. The disease often leads to blindness, heart and blood vessel disease, stroke, kidney failure, amputations, and nerve damage. Diabetes is also on the rise in kids, as a result of obesity."

Dr. Mehmet Oz is intent on helping people overcome diabetes. On the Early Show he offered some suggestions for people who have diabetes, or are at risk for it.

He advocates avoiding white sugar, and foods made with white flour. He advises women who are menopausal to exercise and build muscle. At menopause testosterone is no longer created in the ovaries, and more effort must be taken to develop muscle. More muscle will burn more calories than fat does.

Dr. Oz says that excessive thirst and excess urination and weakness can be indicators of diabetes. He emphasizes that belly fat is the most significant risk factor for Type 2 diabetes.
