Dr. Sandra Cabot recommends a gluten free diet for her patients who are overweight or diabetic. Her recommendation in these instances is to focus on vegetables and protein. Healthy fats like olive oil and virgin coconut oil would also be beneficial.

Dr. Cabot advises to aim for grain free and low carbohydrate foods for those struggling with diabetes or excess weight. And she cautions to avoid most gluten free products because they may still be high in carbohydrate and fat, and may register high on the glycemic index.

Dr. Cabot says, "I recently saw a middle aged woman who had been battling with high blood sugar levels, fatty liver and excess weight for years ... A helpful friend had told her to try a gluten free diet just in case it could help her lose weight. She tried her friend’s suggestion and after 2 months was amazed to find her blood sugar levels coming down into the normal range."
