Domestic abuse is the result of one person in a relationship attempting to control and demean the other. When that turns physical, we call it domestic violence.

Both domestic abuse and domestic violence are power plays. The abuser will use any means to gain dominance. Fear, guilt, shame, intimidation and physical attacks, are all part of the arsenal.

Though traditionally we've thought of the abuser as being male and the victimized as female, men and boys can be abused as well. Abuse can be emotional, verbal, physically violent, or sexual in nature.

"Remember, abusers are very good at controlling and manipulating their victims. People who have been emotionally abused or battered are depressed, drained, scared, ashamed, and confused. They need help to get out, yet they’ve often been isolated from their family and friends. By picking up on the warning signs and offering support, you can help them escape an abusive situation and begin healing."
