Research in the Nurses' Health Study II, that has been ongoing since 1989, indicates that women who consume the greatest amount of omega-3 fatty acids have a lower incidence of endometriosis. Those who take in the lowest amounts of omega-3 fatty acids have a higher incidence of endometriosis.

Women who consumed the highest level of transfat had a greater incidence of endometriosis, with women eating the lowest level of transfat being at less risk.

Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fish and fish oil, and as a derivative from plants as well. Transfat, found for instance in margarines and processed foods and some oils, should be completely avoided.

"About 10-15% of women have endometriosis, according to Stacey Missmer, ScD, Director of Epidemiological Research for Harvard Medical School and one of the researchers. Endometriosis is a potentially painful condition when the type of tissue that lines your uterus is also growing outside your uterus."
