Talk to us about your thyroid!

By HERWriter Guide April 19, 2011 - 7:14am

Thanks to auntlello1 for starting this Group!

Who knew that a small, butterfly shaped gland has such power over us? From hyper and hypo thyriodism to various diseases (including cancer) to weight issues and depression, our thyroid is a huge part of our lives. When all is well with our thyroid, life's good. But when something goes wrong, the effects can be life-changing.

Tell us your story!

Thanks Susan - this is exactly what many people with any type of "disease" needs. To be heard :) Whether it is with questions, suggestions on how to cope, or to simply vent and rant just to make ourselves feel better!

I hope many of you out there will join us, and make this a safe place for thyroid patients to get the support they need. There are so many symptoms with thyroid disease, and too little answers. We are here to help each other find the answers that we need, and to just be a shoulder of understanding.

So, if you have a thyroid disorder, JOIN US TODAY! :)

Welcome Akarr!

With Graves Disease, or any other thyroid imbalance, I don't think the doctors realize how much of a battle it is to then keep your thyroid in harmony with the rest of the body. It seems like it becomes a lifelong battle, with many highs and many lows.

The purpose of this group is to let you, and anyone else out there with under-active or over-active (or both, as fun as it is to swing from one extreme to the other!) know that we are not alone. We have all learned that one little pill or one simple procedure does not always make things better, and we each must find the balance that works for us.

I think if more of the medical community suffered from thyroid disease, there would be a better understanding of the effects it can have on a persons life, and more empathy and compassion would take part. Until then, we can lean on each other for support, even if it is just for a sound board from someone who totally understands how it feels to have a thyroid disease.

I am so glad your are feeling like there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and hope that we can be here for you anytime you need us!

Best Regards,

Auntlello1

I was diagnosed with Graves Disease last fall and had Radiation Therapy February 2, 2011. Seemed like no big deal at the time, but a month later I found myself within the 5-10% of the patient population that has a severe reaction. I was vomiting and nauseated - so nauseated I couldn't speak - for six weeks. I was in the ER six times for IV rehydration. As if that wasn't bad enough, I developed Thyroid Eye Disease, and wake up every morning with what I call marshmallow eyes. The nausea slowly subsided, and my eyes appear to be slowly improving, but I sure got alot more than I bargained for in terms of side effects. Having said I'll that, I'd do it again. Life with hyperthyroidism was, for me, extraordinarily draining both physically and emotionally. I feel much stronger now physically, and far less anxious. I'm still working on establishing proper thyroid levels with my endocrinologist (I suspect I'm now hypothyroid), but I finally feel like I'm out of the woods.
