This morning on Good Morning America Gayle King, best friend of Oprah Winfrey, was interviewed about the January cover of O Magazine.

Oprah has decided to share with her reading audience that she has gained 40 pounds in the last year. Gayle was acting as the representative to explain why Oprah thought this was an important topic to address with her mostly female audience. The most striking comment was Gayle explained that Oprah was not talking about weight for vanity reasons, she was talking about her weight for HEALTH reasons. I wanted to cheer and yell into the TV yes! yes! yes!

We as women need to be concerned about our weight for health reasons. When I help patients get their health on track, all other areas of their lives improve including their self-esteem and confidence. In my practice over 90% of women list weight as one of the reasons they are seeking help. However, when we prioritize what behavioral changes they are willing to make the changes related to weight start trickling down to the bottom of the list.

Currently the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that 2 out of 3 people in America are overweight. The CDC’s definition of an overweight adult is weight that is greater than what is considered healthy for a given height or a weight that increases the likelihood of certain diseases and other health problems. I generally explain the term overweight as carrying more weight than one’s body frame was created to handle, and over time this generally leads to chronic health conditions like heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes.

I believe looking at weight as a health concern helps women become more committed to the healing process and releasing weight from their bodies. As we enjoy this holiday season and prepare for our new year, lets consider making a commitment our health by looking at weight differently - Oprah is!
