If you're like me, you're in the process of making yourself feel better. I'm not depressed--thanks for asking. But I've been guilty of keeping some bad company over Christmas and that has taken a toll.
I am talking of course, about being sucked in by the allure of egg nog and pumpkin pie, cookies and candy, and the chocolate almonds I got from a well-intentioned family member for Christmas. And there were other troublemakers I'd been mixing it up with, I confess.
I'm a low-carber by necessity, by trial and error, and by living and learning from my past mistakes. By now, I really should know better. And I really do. But I also know how to forgive myself for going off the deep end, and get on with things.
Hot chocolate, soda, stuffing and mashed potatoes are not my friends, though they really look like it from time to time. And though I'm old enough to know better sometimes I conveniently forget where interaction with these unsavory elements will lead.
Yeah. It leads to stomach aches and indigestion and feeling like I've expanded in ways I prefer not to think about. And ... I likely have.
But I have made a point of not stepping on the bathroom scales. The scales aren't what tell me things need to change. Feeling nauseous is my barometer.
First step for me is to get away from the bad influences. I'm turning my back on colas and root beer. I've made my way back to my old friends water with lemon.
Instead of pie and potatoes, I turn my attentions to protein and green vegetables. My biggest comfort this time of year comes from homemade chicken stew filled with carrots and peas. A roast beef with green beans makes me sigh with contentment and relief. And the acid test (literally) is the serenity in my gut after I'm done eating.
It's highly possible these foods that work for me may not be the same ones that work for you. The main point is to head back to them, whatever they may be. You'll recognize them. They're the foods that make you feel good after you eat them -- not just before.
As for me, I'm dreaming of a steak with mushrooms and broccoli with butter. A few more days in this direction and I should be feeling like my old self again. How do I know this will work? Because ... I've done it before.
Oh well. It's a New Year, right?
