According to Leslie Beck, a Toronto-based dietitian, if you want to avoid having a heart attack, you just may need to watch your carbohydrate intake.

A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports that saturated fat is better for your heart than highly processed carbohydrates. And eating more refined carbohydrates in place of saturated fat is riskier for your heart than if you'd stuck with the fat in the first place.

Starches have been extolled for years as being a superior replacement for the evil saturated fat. Only recently has research been conducted into the part that carbohydrates plays in causing heart disease. Old assumptions are now being challenged for the first time.

"Experts warn that our obesity epidemic and growing intake of highly processed carbohydrates have created a 'perfect storm' for heart disease. What’s more, in a population that’s predominately overweight and sedentary, refined carbohydrates likely cause even greater damage than saturated fat."
