Cholesterol is measured in many ways. The human body is designed to need cholesterol;it insulates nerves and makes needed hormones. 2/3 of the cholesterol in the body are made in the liver and 1/3 of the cholesterol is from eating animal products.

Lipoproteins are measured in the blood lipid test (a regular cholesterol test). Lipoproteins are the protein-cholesterol combination that is in the body. Cholesterol is wrapped in a protein and it is this combination that serves to show your risk factors for many diseases.

HDL Cholesterol - This is considered “bad” cholesterol and should be under 40 when tested. If the levels are over 60 it is a risk factor for stroke and other heart related issues. It is this cholesterol that builds in the vessels of the body and form plaque.

LDL Cholesterol – This is the “good” cholesterol and has different levels as a range of normal to very high. Normal is under 100, near normal is 100-129, borderline high is 130-159, high is 160-189, and very high is 190. These are the cholesterol that clean the blood.
