Everything is organic these days. Supposedly. Or is it? You hear many merchandising voices urging you to buy this organic product or that eco-friendly device. It can be confusing, overwhelming.

When in doubt, remember these three words: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Expand on these basics by monitoring your water use. It's so easy to turn on a tap and let it run. But there are many ways to reduce, reuse and even recycle water.

Look for organic foods. Avoid genetically modified or irradiated foods. Shop locally. This cuts down the amount of trucking required, reducing pollution and gas consumption, and also means fruit and vegetables aren't shipped before they're ripe. Better yet, grow your own food using organic fertilizer and compost.

Look into ways of making your home more energy-efficient and less toxic.

"Slow down. Take a breath. Take stock of the way you live. If you look carefully and objectively, you'll likely find some areas where you can easily trim a bit of fat. Getting back to the basics is an excellent start."
