Because of increased traveling around the holidays, many people all but give up on their exercise routines. “Make a conscious effort to stay active while on the road,” advises Dr. Reeves. “If visiting relatives over the holidays, try coordinating a family walk during the warmest part of the day as a way to burn some calories and still spend quality time with the people you are there to visit.”

As the weather cools down and people retreat indoors for the fall and winter seasons, a combination of factors can have a negative health impact. The cooler months bring with them the hectic holiday season, where people typically eat less healthfully, experience higher levels of stress, exercise less, get fewer hours of sleep and are in contact with more people (and germs!). All these things can lead to a run-down immune system and cause an influx in the incidence of colds and flu.
