La hierba camedrio es un ejemplo que refuta dramáticamente la creencia ampliamente sostenida de que si se ha usado un tratamiento durante miles de años, debe ser segura. El camedrio crece de manera silvestre en la región del Mediterráneo, especialmente en Grecia y Siria. Tiene una larga tradición de uso para la ]]>gota]]> , así como enfermedades febriles, ]]>asma]]> , tos, ]]>depresión]]> e ]]>insuficiencia cardiaca congestiva]]> . También se decía que mejoraba la digestión e incrementaba el apetito. Lo que los herbolarios tradicionales parecen haberse perdido es que el camedrio es tóxico para el hígado.

En los años de 1980, el camedrio se volvió un tratamiento popular para el control de peso en Francia. El resultado fue una pequeña epidemia de hepatitis. ]]>1-12]]> Investigación subsecuente demostró concluyentemente que la hierba es tóxica para el hígado pero no ha identificado precisamente a los componentes culpables. ]]>13-18]]> También han ocurrido problemas cuando productos que en la etiqueta dicen contener ]]>escutelaria]]> han resultado contener camedrio en su lugar. ]]>19]]>
