Many of my women patients suffer from hot flashes, night sweats and other hormonal issues. These are common complaints from women and many associate these problems as female hormonal issues.

Most of my patients are surprised to learn that when I treat them I do not always start with their estrogen and progesterone levels instead I look at their cortisol levels instead. For the rest of this article I will refer to estrogens and progesterone as female hormones and cortisol as the stress hormone. Often times treating imbalances in the stress hormone will correct many of the symptoms associated with their cycle.

Cholesterol is the backbone structure of both the female hormones and the stress hormones. The body can only produce a certain amount at a time. So with the quantity provided the body must decide whether to convert the body into female or stress hormones. When a person is balanced there is enough for both systems. When a person is under a large amount of stress the body tends to shift into producing mostly stress hormone because it is more important for survival than our female hormones. So when women come into my office with female , PMS, perimenopausal or menopausal symptoms I always investigate to see the stress hormones are playing a significant role in the problem. If I decide that they are, I create a plan that will support the stress hormone in becoming balanced and this usually reduces the symptoms associated with originating complaint. I might still have to work with the female hormones too if the problem is not completely resolved.

The take-home point that I would like you to see is that sometimes you need qualified eyes to look at the problems and take an educated and fresh look at persistent problems that are not resolving using the old standard methods.
