Dr. Daemon Jones is a naturopathic physician who values food as elements of healing and balance. She emphasizes the importance of the liver in its relationship with estrogens and with the detoxification process. A liver that is not funtioning properly in other respects can also throw the menstrual cycle out of whack.

Dr. Dae recommends a plant-based diet, focusing on yellow and orange foods for their beta-carotene as they assist in the liver detoxification process.

Dr. Dae:
Our liver is a tremendous organ, but it’s also responsible for conjugating our estrogens, which means manipulating them in a way that’s appropriate for what we need to use them for. And it also helps to put, once we have used them, put them into our digestive waste system, our bowel, so we can get rid of them through our bowel movements. And so, when our liver function is not operating appropriately, because it has to do so many things beyond just this one function of our menstrual cycle, then it also throws off that balance.

So it’s very important, again, plant-based foods, legumes, soy products can be really helpful for that. So, we really want to focus on artichoke, beets, things that are yellow, or things that are orange because they have beta-carotene, which is really important for that liver detoxification process as well. So, those are things that I look at.
