Are you over dealing with painful menstrual cramps month after month? The solution may be a new line of medical marijuana products co-created by comedian and The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg and Maya Elisabeth, the founder of Om Edibles, a Northern California medical marijuana company created by women.
“For me, I feel like if you don’t want to get high high, this is a product specifically just to get rid of discomfort,” Goldberg told Vanity Fair in an interview. “Smoking a joint is fine, but most people can’t smoke a joint and go to work.”
The line, Whoopi & Maya, currently features four different products and is set to be released to California residents later this April. The products in the line are Soak, Savor, Rub and Relax.
The line also includes products that only have cannabidiol (CBD), which won't give you the same euphoric effects that may come with marijuana.
Soak is described on the Whoopi and Maya website as an Epsom Salt bath soak that is “combined with cannabis, skin nourishing oils, and therapeutic grade essential oils.” The bath soak is available in three scents, the line’s signature sent called Amber Moon, which is described as “warm, woodsy and inviting,” as well as lavender and unscented.
Savor is a blend of cacao, cannabis, coconut oil, agave and sea salt. "Coupled with cannabis this raw, organic cacao is sure to help with inflammation, sleep, pain, irritability, joint pain, and the uterine cramping and discomfort associated with the menstrual cycle, all while providing for a truly health beneficial experience,” the site said.
Rub, according to the website, has been specially made to combat menstrual pain. The rub, in addition to containing cannabis, contains beeswax, natural oils, St John's Wort, chamomile, cramp bark and white willow bark. It is also scented with their signature scent. “The CB1 & CB2 receptors located within the skin epidermis gratefully absorb the sun grown cannabinoids, and receive valuable support and assistance from the cannabis plant when applied topically,” according to the website.
The final product, Relax, is a tincture, which is a liquid that can be mixed into a drink or placed under the tongue. “Even Queen Victoria found relief once a month with her favorite THC infused tincture,” the website says. Relax contains a mixture of cane alcohol, cannabis, honey, cramp bark, elderberries, red raspberry leaf, motherwort and passion flower.
The industry has potential for significant growth, and Goldberg and Elisabeth are joining early to help women treat sexual health issues in a way many might not have considered. According to research firms New Frontier and ArcView Market Research, the U.S. marijuana industry is estimated to be worth $5.7 billion, and sales will reach $21.8 billion by 2020.
