Older women with osteoarthritis have greater bone density and flexibility when they practice tai chi, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. And as an added bonus, after taking part in a tai chi program, these older women are less afraid that they will fall.

"In the small study, researchers from South Korea and the United States recruited 82 women living with osteoarthritis, a painful condition caused by wear and tear, and one that causes joint inflammation and stiffness. The participants' average age was 62 years old. One group of women enrolled in a six-month tai chi program designed for people with arthritis, while the other group of women resumed life as usual."

Other research indicates that along with greater bone density and greater flexibility, practicing tai chi offers a number of other health benefits as well. Tai chi can soothe back pain, lower blood pressure and reduce the effects of stress.
