According to the results of a study in Osteoporosis International, it seems apparent that alot of women are kidding themselves.

Doctors at the Columbia University Medical Center in New York City studied the awareness amongst postmenopausal women as to the risk they may have for fractures.

"Ethel Siris, M.D., of the Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, and colleagues used data from the Global Longitudinal Study of Osteoporosis in Women to compare self-perceived fracture risk with actual risk among 60,393 postmenopausal women aged 55 and older. Baseline surveys were mailed to the women between October 2006 and February 2008."

Even among women who had already received a diagnosis of osteoporosis or of osteopenia, less than half believed themselves to be at any significant risk for fracture. Most did not see themselves as being in this category.

The doctors are concerned that women who are unaware of these very real potential dangers are not going to make use of the care and treatment that is available to them.
