Dr. Kelly Brogan treats many women for postpartum depression in her practice as an integrative reproductive psychiatrist.

"In my practice, I routinely recommend omega-3 fatty acids, SAMe, light therapy, folic acid, exercise and cranial electrical stimulation, and refer to qualified acupuncturists for management of antepartum and postpartum illness."

Omeg-3 fatty acids are sorely depleted by pregnancy and then later by lactation. Therapeutic doses can improve mood.

SAMe helps alleviate liver problems. Folic acid (Vitamin B9) helps to prevent birth defects.

Light therapy, used for half an hour to an hour every day, can help to reduce depression, though Dr. Brogan does not recommend it for people with any history of Bipolar disorder.

Cranial electrical stimulation helps reduce anxiety, depression and insomnia. Acupuncture may reduce depression. Exercise helps to lift the mood.

Dr. Brogan strongly encourages any woman who is struggling with postpartum depression to contact a professional who can develop a treatment plan specific to her own unique needs.
