Today is World Osteoporosis Day, so pour yourself a nice, tall cold one (milk!) and give a toast to your bones!!
And while you're enjoying some calcium, here are some facts to mull over:
1) Between 12 to 20 percent of people die within one year following a hip fracture.
2) It is estimated that 80 percent of those who are at high risk of osteoporosis, and have suffered at least one fracture, have neither been identified nor treated for the disease.
3) Many health insurance providers will not cover diagnosis and treatment prior to a first fracture, even when it is cost effective to do so.
The above facts are courtesy of the International Osteoporosis Foundation. You can learn more about World Osteoporosis Day and osteoporosis healthcare policies at:http://www.iofbonehealth.org/about-iof/iof-programs/outreach-education/world-osteoporosis-day.html
