There is an upcoming study that will be appearing in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry showing the results of Internet Web Surfing and increased brain power among older adults.
Researchers divided 24 people ages 55-76 into two groups: those who used the Internet and those who did not. Participants performed web searches and book reading tasks while researchers examined brain function. During the "web search" activity, those who did this on a regular basis showed twice as much brain activity than the novice group. They even registered activity in parts of the brain not activated during book-reading, including areas that control decision-making and complex reasoning.
According to many experts, including Dr Andrew Weil from the University of Arizona, the Internet offers great potential for exercising the brain. Dr Weil predicts that the generational divide will cease to exist between the computer literate and illiterate.
