The local news health reporter just did a piece on molecular breast imaging (MBI), featuring a patient who has breast cancer in her family. The MBI was ordered because the patient has dense breasts and a traditional mammography might not provide a good enough reading.
The MBI involves taking images of the breast with two gamma cameras. The cost is fairly comparable to a traditional mammography, but less expensive than an MRI. This is a fairly new, and still experiemental procedure, but is expected to be available to the general public later this year.
