Recently the National Institutes of Health (NIH) released draft guidelines which create a framework for federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. Pursuant to the President’s Executive Order, issued on March 9, 2009, these guidelines establish policy and procedures under which NIH will fund research in this area; and ensure all research is conducted in accordance with applicable law, is ethically responsible, and is scientifically worthy.
Over the next few weeks the public has the opportunity to comment on these draft guidelines, and NIH will be analyzing the content, as well as volume, of the comments as it finalizes the guidelines. While the executive order is a giant leap forward in terms of federal research, there are a number of areas where the guidelines need to be clarified and/or changed to ensure that current research is allowed to continue and no new bureaucratic hurdles are created that would slow the pace of progress.
