My husband and I presently are covered under group health coverage but he has an opportunity to work as a contractor next year which would almost triple his present salary. The problem is we would have to then purchase our own health insurance. I am 37 and have PCOS but have had succcess with mitigating it through diet and we have had two children. We have not decided for sure to stop having children or perhaps try once more. However, I am concerned about this decision because I can't seem to find health insurance that we can purchase that would include maternity coverage. After several weeks of searching I did find one company that caries a rider which would at least let me negotiate maternity labor and delivery at a PPO rate should I get pregnant. However, its looking like becuase I take metaformin to manage the PCOS, and perhaps becuase of the PCOS itself they will likely deny coverage.
Besides the fact that I am appalled at the thought of how many women and unborn children are probably not getting quality prenatal care because of this, I am worried about us making this decision. I am presently a stay at home Mom and want to continue in this choice. I do teach college classes from time to time but group coverage is unavailable. At the same time I don't want to hold my husband back in any way and we sure could use that salary increase. We are willing to purchase this insurance and even then I don't expect that an insurance company is going to fully cover all of our costs.
Does anyone here know Texas well enough to help me know where to look for options and/or who I might contact to see what is being done about covering women and children of the self employed in Texas who need this kind of coverage.
I have always been covered by a group plan so this is brand new territory for me.
