As women in developed countries like the United States move into peri-menopause and menopause they tend to have far more symptoms than in less developed countries. Sometimes the symptoms are so severe that they can interrupt a women’s ability to conduct her daily activities.
A solution of using small amounts of estrogens, progesterone or both was developed to help reduce or eliminate these symptoms. This is called hormone replacement therapy or HRT. There have been several studies looking and the benefits and pitfalls of HRT and a study reported by the Journal of the American Medical Association, July 15, 2009 concluded that HRT in any forms increases the risk of ovarian cancer.
The study was conducted in Denmark with over 900,000 women between the ages of 50-79 years old over a 10 year period of time. Women who were using HRT were about 40 times more likely to develop a tumor in the ovaries than women not using HRT.
What this means is that there should be strong considerations about using HRT as a solution to peri-menopause and menopausal symptoms. What are other choices for women to consider? Naturopathic medicine treatments have been very successful in my practice because I’m looking at treating all the imbalances that show up with women in the peri-menopausal and menopausal stages. This includes mental, emotional, physical and hormonal symptoms. When I look at these in combination I have really happy women with reduced or eliminated symptoms. So consider all the alternatives before taking HRT.
**As note of caution don’t just think you can pop some soy pills and your symptoms will go away I find you need to go to an expert to look at everything drugstore or internet medicine will not suffice.
