To the naturopathic physician, the organs of elimination are key players in the game plan of health. The kidney is one such organ, as it removes waste such as viruses, bacteria, and environmental toxins from the body.
To aid in this continual circuit of detoxification, the naturopathic doctor (ND) teaches their patients how to make lifestyle changes that will cut down the intake of toxins and facilitate their elimination.
With less stress on the body's various systems, greater health is the end result.
The naturopath will recommend a diet that limits sugar and processed foods, and that emphasizes fruits and vegetables. Wherever possible, foods containing important nutrients are preferred over supplements.

Alcohol, carbonated drinks, coffee and black tea are discouraged since they burden the kidneys.
Increased water and reduced salt also reduces the risk of kidney stones. Cranberry juice and supplementation of magnesium and vitamin B6 may be recommended.
Keeping blood pressure down helps the kidneys and so the naturopath may recommend exercise and weight loss, along with supplements like CoQ10, calcium, and magnesium.
The naturopath may use reflexology, a treatment that focuses mainly on the feet, to improve kidney blood flow.
They may also be trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and may use acupuncture or acupressure to reinforce the patient's vitality or life-force and stimulate kidney function.
Naturopathic medicine offers a wide variety of therapies and treatments that will protect and improve kidney health.
The end game is always the enhanced well-being of the patient.
