Christine Miserandino has a chronic incurable disease. She talks here about her life before illness, when she was a vibrant young dancer, dedicated to her passion.
Then the gradual deterioration began, which took away her ability to dance, changed her very appearance so that she no longer recognized herself in the mirror.
She no longer knew who she was. Only knew she could no longer be what she wanted to be.
After she became sick, her joints betrayed her. Her hair started falling out. The Lupus rash appeared on her face. She had to learn a new dance, one adorned with insurance forms, medication and medical terminology.
"After a recent birthday, I had the sad realization that I have now been sick longer then I have been healthy. Although I can remember dancing and living that lifestyle, I feel like I am talking about someone else. I look at pictures of myself and 'she' looks so different than I do now. I can’t even remember the memories that caused the smile on the face of the girl in the pictures."
This is the story of chronic illness. It is a story that needs to be heard.
