The European Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports some interesting findings from a study whose purpose was to measure the effects of zinc supplementation. The results were intriguing.
According to this study it would seem that young women who regularly take a supplement of seven milligrams of zinc gluconate may experience a marked drop in anger and depression.
The results raise some questions. For instance, why does this supplementation with zinc have an effect on women and not men? The data doesn't explain this.
Zinc deficiency is far from rare. It is thought that as much as thirty percent of the world's population may suffer from this. One of the interesting symptoms of a deficiency in zinc is a marked tendency to experience strong mood swings.
"Similar studies in lab animals showed that only females experienced increases in aggression levels when zinc-deficient, and the new data appears to support this anger-reducing effect in women following zinc supplementation, said the researchers."
