The journal Cancer reports that many who are terminally ill with cancer are subjected to radiation therapy (radiotherapy) which does nothing to help in most cases and contributes nothing but suffering to their last days. It keeps them in hospital even if their wish is to be able to die at home. Therapy did not diminish the pain, instead it increased the pain.
"When mainstream medicine runs out of treatments to try for long-term cancer control, so-called palliative radiotherapy is often ordered for end-stage cancer patients. The rationale? It's supposed to control cancer-related pain and other symptoms by reducing the number of cancer cells. That, in theory, can relieve pressure and bleeding and give patients a better quality of life in their final months and days."
Researchers at the University Hospital in Dusseldorf, Germany, also found that these types of palliative treatments were not helpful, keeping patients in the hospital when they wanted to go home to die.
