Organic products of all kinds are popping up everywhere. At least, we think they are. Manufacturers assure us they are. But not everything labelled that boasts of being an organic product lives up to the claim. How do you tell whether or not something is really as organic as they say?
According to the USDA National Organic Program (NOP), "organic" means it was grown or produced without pesticide and synthetic fertilizers which kill living organisms. It comes from a place that is not tainted by sewage, and has nothing to do with genetic modification or ionizing radiation. Organic meat comes from animals not given antibiotics or growth hormones.
"Pesticides belong to a group of chemicals intended to kill living organisms and are intended to be toxic material. Consuming small amounts of pesticides each day may lead to a build-up of these toxic materials in the body. Pesticides in and on food have been linked to a variety of health problems including skin, eye, and lung irritation, cancers, nervous system side effects, and changes in hormone levels. Organic produce is grown to be 'earth friendly', without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers."
