To do it or not to do it? That question plagues many teenagers. Losing your virginity is not a decision to make lightly. Sex is much more than just a pleasurable act. It’s physically and emotionally risky. You may think you’re ready, but are you really? Here are 10 things that need to be true before you have sex the first time.
1. Be Aware of All the Risks
Know the risks. Heart break, regret, pregnancy and STDs can all happen the first time you have sex. Have this covered before having sex.
2. Know How to Prevent Those Risks
Know the best ways to prevent pregnancy and STDs. You and your partner need to read up on safe sex. Boys need to think about birth control just as much as girls.
3. Have a Plan In Case of Pregnancy
Even if you take every precaution, you can still get pregnant. If you're not ready to deal with having a baby or an abortion, then you're not ready for sex.
4. Check the Age of Consent
Make sure you and your partner can legally have sex in your state. Often this means any sexual conduct, not just intercourse. If you can't do it legally, don't.
5. Be Sober
Drugs and alcohol impair judgment. If you’re drunk, you’re more likely to do something you’ll regret later.
6. Trust Your Partner – Completely
You're completely vulnerable when you have sex. If you have any doubts about your partner and how he or she will treat you during – and after – the act, don’t do it.

The first time you have sex, it might not be romantic, fun, or even pleasurable. In fact, it might be uncomfortable and painful.

You should only have sex if you really want to have sex. Not because your partner is pressuring you.

You can say NO any time before you have sex - even the second before it - no matter what you've said in the past. You should never go against your inner voice.
