Yesterday in the United States was Labor Day. This day is generally considered the end of summer and is celebrated with barbecues, parties, and last minute vacations before returning to the fall routine and schedule. I love a holiday as much as the next person but this year I actually decided to look up the origins of the holiday to see if I was missing some emotional or spiritual roots to the holiday. I learned that it was signed into law because of labor disputes and the killing of workers in the late 1800’s. The federal government feared there would be more violence if they did not take swift and corrective action by creating a holiday that focused on celebration, families and fun.
Thinking about this in a metaphoric way, I thought what a wonderful idea to turn a difficult and hard situation into a celebration and happy occasion. In our lives each of us has experienced a situation where we have worked hard to accomplish something and perhaps have not given ourselves credit or a break from all the hard work. I like the idea of taking some time off to celebrate our accomplishments and to stop and honor ourselves for what we have completed so far. It gives us time to restore ourselves for the rest of our journey.
When I first started my practice I was like many other entrepreneurs--I worked seven days a week, often working through holidays and passing up vacations. I was laboring and not giving myself time to rest or enjoy the fruits of my labor. After years of this I became exhausted. I was forced to take time off because I was too tired to work through holidays anymore. I much prefer the idea of taking a holiday to celebrate all the accomplishments of work not matter how big or small. It is a wonderful idea to me to celebrate with good healthy food, and spending time in nature like a park or a backyard surrounded with people who I love and adore, like my friends and family. After reading about the origins of Labor day I have a new respect for the holiday and the new meaning that I bring to it. In fact I think I will start calling it the Fruits of my Labor Day just as a reminder!
