The power of community to positively impact health was shown strongly as we watched the unfolding of miners' situation in Chile. On August 5, 2010, there was a mining accident at the Saint Jose mine, and 33 men were caught in a mine unable to get out. They were hundreds of yards underground. I remember hearing the story of them being stuck and thinking what a terrible situation it was. They had a wired camera that was sent down to see how the miners were doing. The foreman was given accolades for his ability to pull the miners together and keep their spirits high in a difficult situation. One of the miners said humor and religion were what kept them alive. They were well organized they talked out their problems
They were praying and supporting one another, sleeping and talking together, and creating community. They were all supporting one another emotionally and spiritually. They pulled together knowing if one miner would be saved they all would be saved. It struck me as a powerful example of how the power of believing in a higher power has the ability to mentally get people through the most incredible circumstances. I consider "creating a supportive network around you" to be one of my four pillars of health. I know it is the basis for creating and maintaining health and longevity in life.
Not only did the miners create a supportive network in the mine, the world mining community came together to find a solution to getting the miners to safety. It took careful planning and to attention to detail to safely get them all out. The name of the capsule that was sent down to rescue the miners was called the Phoenix. The name Phoenix is significant because it symbolizes a bird that was on fire and then rose from the ashes. In a sense, isn’t that exactly what these 33 miners did?
Think about your hardships and how you were able to get through them. Was it your strength of character and your belief in yourself or your higher power? Was there someone, like a friend or stranger who helped you through it? Community and spirit can change lives.
