This weekend I had the joy of attending a conference that talked about whole food nutrition. It was held at Tai Sophia Institute in Laurel, Maryland. It was a wonderful day that was filled with information from brilliant professionals in the nutrition industry. There were several things that made this conference a supportive healing experience for me. First, I was able to be in the presence of speakers whose books and philosophies are things I have studied over the years. The focus of the conversation was whole foods and whole food nutrition not just vitamins and minerals or supplements. It was an opportunity for me to learn more about my life’s work from people that have been doing this work for years. It was a wonderful experience for me. This is the joy of continuing education.
In many professions people are required to attend classes to keep up their skill and knowledge of their subject area. When you are interested in the work or job you have the conferences and continuing education classes as something to look forward to and enjoy so when you get back to work you have new tools to do your job better. This is what keeps people enthusiastic about their work. I think it is also important to take continuing education classes for things you are interested in in your life. To keep you involved in your life. There are several studies that show when older people take classes on new subjects they improve their memory. This is why members of the medical community recommend Sudoku or crossword puzzles to senior citizens. I go a little further by trying to help people identity an activity that required them to learn a new fun skill as part of their treatment like learning to swim, or taking an art class. I also recommend continuing life education classes to people who suffer from depression or attention deficit disorder (for children and adults) because it helps to create excitement and change the neural patterns in the brain. When is the last time you have gone to a lecture, class or workshop that gets you excited about a passion within you? Go find an department of recreation class or cooking demonstration or something that you have always wanted to do and see how you feel after taking that class. You might be amazed that it lifts your spirits and gives you a new perspective about your life. Passion is one way we heal from the inside out.
