Energy zones are the main focus of reflexology as a disease management system. They are concerned with energy divisions in your body. These zones are vertical or longitudinal. They exist on either side of the body – the left and the right side - so there are pairs. There exist 10 energy zones (or five pairs) in our body. They run up from our feet (or hands) to the top of our head. It is believed that ailments and imbalances of any organ lying in a specific/particular energy zone can be treated by pressing its corresponding end at the feet (or hand).
It is important for you to understand your energy grid (longitudinal and traverse) so that you can work them at home in case of illness until you set an appointment date with your doctor or therapist. However, the procedure will have to be learned from a reflexologist through the various healing sessions. Here is a brief on the 10 energy zones in your body:
• Zone One: It starts at the thumb of the right hand, travels up the arm and reaches the brain. From here it travels down to the big toe of the right leg.
• A similar longitude as described above exists for the left side of the body as well.
• Zone Two: This zone begins from the second finger of the right hand and goes up the right arm to the brain and then descends down to the second toe of the right leg.
• A similar zone as described above exists for the left side of the body.
• Zone Three: This begins from the third finger on the right hand and goes up the arm to the brain and then travels down from there to the third toe of the right leg.
• A similar zone as described above exists for the left side of the body.
• Zone Four: This starts at the fourth finger of the right hand, travels up the arm to the brain and then descends to the fourth toe of the right leg.
• A similar zone as described above exists for the left side of the body.
• Zone Five: This extends from the little finger of the right hand, travels up the arm, goes up to the brain and then travels down to the little toe of the right leg.
• A similar zone as described above exists for the left side of the body.
Thus the extension of the zones is between the webs of the fingers to the web of the toes. All the organs that lie in the same energy zone are interlinked to one another as the energy flow in this region is one. For example, sometimes kidney problems result in eye problems as both these organs lie on the same energy zone.
There are three transverse zones on our feet that correspond to the three transverse zones of our body. Their correspondence has been explained as follows:
• An imaginary line drawn across the upper shoulder girdle. The area covered above this line relates to the head and the neck. This is considered as line 1. The corresponding section on the foot is an imaginary line drawn across just above the metatarsals or one might say at the end of the phalanges of the foot.
• An imaginary line drawn across the lower level of the ribs i.e., at the waist level. This is line 2. The area on the body that lies between line 1 and line 2 relate to the upper abdomen or thorax. The corresponding line on the foot is an imaginary line drawn across the foot through the base of the metatarsals.
• An imaginary line drawn across the groin or the pelvic floor area is the line 3. The body area lying between lines 2 and 3 relate to the organs in the lower abdomen and pelvis. The corresponding line on the foot is an imaginary line drawn across halfway of the heel of the foot.
