If your period is abnormally late and extremely heavy what could be some reasons as to why?

I am only 15 and have not been sexually active therefore I cannot be pregnant. I was 18 days late for my period and I have a very heavy flow today and non stop cramps. Usually I could keep one tampon in from when I woke up to before bed, but today I went through 6 within a twelve hour time period and have had continuous mild cramps. is there any explanation for this?
