I am 26 and have never been sexually active. I have been experiencing vulvar itching and irritation for the past 3 months. I do not have any unusual discharge and have not noticed any changes in the skin. I origianally tried over-the-counter Monistat (3 day treatment), however it made the itching worse. I went to my GYN and had cultures taken and while we waited for the results I was prescribed Diflucan and Clobetasol cream. All cultures came back negative and I continued using the Clobetasol for 2 weeks. During the course of the 2 weeks the itching definately lessened in severity but it did not go away. I went back to my GYN and was prescribed Clotrimazole and Betamethasone cream and I am supposed to use this for another 2 weeks. If this does not work I was told a biopsy would be the next step. So my question is this - If I end up having the biopsy how is the site chosen if the skin only looks irritated/red in general with no lesions or bumps? I want nothing more than to figure out the problem but it just seems to me that a biopsy on a non-specific site will not be of much help. Any clarification about having a vulvar biopsy would be greatly appreciated.
