Could I only get Trichomonas from having sex with someone who has had sex with some else that is infected?

I was checked for STDs just under a month ago and everything came back normal. No STDs. I went into the doctor yesterday and was told I might have Trichomonas now. Does that mean my boyfriend cheated on me with someone who was infected from the time that I was last checked?
