Our home is our sanctuary, a place to kick off your shoes, put on your fluffy socks, cuddle up in front of the sofa and forget about the outside world. But how comfortable do you feel with billions allergens surrounding you? Do those dust mites burrow in that comfy sofa as much as you do? Are those cockroaches appreciating your love of cakes? Does the mold love lingering to that warm, muggy shower too? Those unwanted house mates can turn your lovely happy home into the house of horrors for allergy sufferers.
Over the years various members of my family have suffered from assorted allergies and as a consequence I have put together a few handy tips to reduce the amount of allergens in your home, these unfortunately, can be quite time consuming, however, they are worth it! It means you can present that relaxation sanctuary to all welcomed guests into your home.
Depending on the allergy you or other family members suffer from, some techniques of cleaning can be more effective than others. The key is to change your entire cleaning routine, no areas should be overlooked and in turn this means you and your family will be able to breathe a sigh of relief – with sniffling or sneezing!
Firstly don’t go mad trying to deep clean everything! Moderation is the key. If your allergy sufferer particularly suffers at night time, try washing their sheets more often, at least once a week at a high temperature of about 50⁰c and even encasing all your beds in mite-proof material, which can be costly – but so worth it to give the whole household a restful night’s sleep.
Secondly; flooring is a key area, it covers the whole of your home and it has been found that by removing your carpets and replacing it (which I did and it worked fantastically, never realised all the dirt hiding in that fluffy thing!) with hardwood flooring as they hold less allergens and bacteria, if that isn't possible then always try to hover a minimum of once a week with a hover that has a high-efficient air filter that has great suction.
Thirdly, we found that windows are a big issue for our family and many allergy suffers alike as they are the main contact point for pollen to seep its way in to your home, particularly in the summer time. Always close the windows during this time and resort to air conditioning, it may become more costly but you and your family will feel the benefits. As well as this always, remember to remove all mold from the window and window sills to ensure the bare minimum of allergens are surrounding you.
Above all don’t all anyone to smoke anywhere in your home! Even if you do – stop! This can be the most harmful of all. We forced all our guests to smoke outside and the improvements were outstanding. These steps aren't guaranteed to work; however, they worked fantastically for me and should reduce the amount of allergens in your home and in turn make your home a more pleasant place to be for all the family, including the allergy sufferers.
