Growing up has never been easy, but today's teens face risks that you probably never even imagined when you were young. Unfortunately, many teens don't want their parents to worry, so they do not share these problems with adults that might be able to help. Here are some contemporary challenges that your teen may fail to tell you about.
1. Gangs
Many of today's youth are confronted with gang violence in their schools. While most consider this an inner city problem, it has found its way into small rural school districts as well. Your teen may find themselves being pressured to join a gang or being threatened with violence if they refuse.
2. Bullying
Bullies have always existed, but with the prevalence of cyber bullying, your teens don't even have a safe place to retreat to within their own homes. You can do a lot to keep this from happening simply by never allowing your children to keep their computer in their room and by keeping a close eye on what they are doing when they are on their computer or phone.
3. Depression
It may be easy to think that your teen has nothing to worry about and should be living a happy, care-free existence. It should be that way, but teens often suffer with depression to the point of being suicidal. Be an involved parent, and make it your business to know what is going on in their mind. Don't hesitate to seek counseling if you even think there might be a problem.
4. Substance Abuse
Even the most well-behaved teens can give in to peer pressure and take a drink or experiment with other drugs. Unfortunately, there are a bevy of highly addictive and dangerous drugs readily available these days. Make sure your teen knows the facts about these drugs. Pay attention to where they are going. If there is a party, make sure there will be responsible adults present. In a worst-case scenario, you may have to consider sending them to treatment if they become dependent on some of the strongest substances out there. Luckily there are natural ways to fight something nasty like an opiate dependency. Large amounts of Vitamin C and even something like the frequency stimulation method can help break an ugly cycle.
5. STDs
Teens have always believed they are invincible, and that tends to make them extremely careless about sex. They think they are in love, and nothing could possibly go wrong. You may not approve of your teen having sex, but it is best to keep them safe from an STD that could cause long term complications. Explain the facts to them, and strongly consider providing them with condoms.
Make it a habit to talk to your teen on a regular basis, and stay involved. Let them know you are there to help them with these problems or anything else that they may be trying to deal with. Knowing they have someone to depend on can go a long way towards having happy and healthy teens.
