The selfie took off in 2013. According to Oxford Dictionaries, a selfie is “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.” Between Jimmy Kimmel’s latest seflie with the Clintons and Ellen’s epic shot at the Oscars, celebs everywhere are jumping on the bandwagon. Most recently, Bill Nye the “Science Guy” upped the ante and posted a selfie with President Barack Obama and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. It’s clear that selfies are here to stay. To add even more perspective to the movement, if you click on the #selfie hashtag on Instagram, you’ll find 90 million posts and counting.
Since the selfie’s birth, there have been countless articles, tutorials and online videos instructing how to master the selfie. The question remains: How do you take the perfect selfie?
• Find your angles and keep it proportional. Know which angles work best for you, whether it’s taking the picture from your right side or your left. Practice makes perfect! Also, avoid lifting your phone too high in hopes of eliminating the appearance of a double chin. Holding your phone up too high can make your head look very large and your body small. Instead, keep your phone at shoulder level.
• Smile with your eyes. Channel your inner Tyra Banks and show emotion through your eyes. Your eyes are a great way to convey a sentiment, be it happiness, sexiness or anger.
• Give your smile style. Try out different smiles in your seflies like a shy half-smile, cute pout or the ever popular full blown laughing smile. Switch it up from time to time to show off your style!
