Recently, I’ve seen tons of media attention around “oil pulling” and it got me thinking “what the heck is that?" So I did what any curious woman would do, grabbed my iPad and Googled it. I was shocked by how many oil pulling articles were out there! This isn’t just another fad trend, this has been around for thousand of years!
So, what is oil pulling? On Mara Landis' blog "Do Your Homework" she explains that “oil pulling is an ancient Aruveydic remedy for oral health and detoxification. You simply swish a tablespoon of organic coconut oil in your mouth for 15-20 minutes first thing in the morning before eating. Once you are done swishing the oil you spit it out, do not swallow it because the oil is filled with toxins.”
Ancient Ayurveda - an alternative system of medicine native to India believe this method pulls the toxins from your body and especially your mouth were most bacteria lives. In eastern philosophy, teeth are believed to be the root of all health related issues. It is also said that oil pulling cures over 25 systemic diseases such as migraines, arthritis, infections, fevers, among many others. You can see the full list here.
Sounds simple enough, right? 20 minutes a day to better oral and overall health, I’d say it’s worth a try.
