I had a triple ankle fusion (2 screws up through my heel and one across my ankle) 10 1/2 months ago. I was told that I would have three months of hell then there would be no more pain from the arthritis. Not so. I am still experiencing excruciating pain night and day. I can only walk with difficulty and with the aid of a cane. When I first try to walk the pain is so intense it brings tears to my eyes. I wear the air cast on days I can and if I have to do any amount of walking. I can't remember the last time I had a decent night's sleep because of the pain. When I drive my car, the ankle pain brings tears to my eyes and even sitting in the passenger seat is difficult because I cannot rest my heel unless I have on the air cast. My ankle is continually swollen and extremely tender to touch and is constantly black and blue. I just don't understand it and I don't know what to do. My surgeon says that according to the x-rays and the cat scan the fusion went well and he cannot understand why I am still experiencing so much pain. I am so frustrated and at a loss on what to do. I elevate my ankle several times a day and wrap it in an ice pack to relieve the pain and swelling. I often have to ice my ankle through the night as well to relieve the pain. Any suggestions will be gratefully accepted. I've always been a busy and active person and this is driving me crazy. (Scottishlass)
