I know it aches when you have someone you just connect, unload their heart and they hit on a topic that is so heavy and gut wrenching. You can hear the vibration in their voice which indicates they have reached their breaking point. You want to offer them a tissue but all you can do is offer them your well wishes and support you can give that comes from the top of your head.
My name is Curtis Walker and I know that feeling of sheer helplessness. I was there and I had to hear it from many families that I have encountered through support I extended to them. I spent many years taking care of the needs of my sister who had Lewy’s Bodies Dementia. A horrific disease that robs so many of so much. As heavy as it was I had to go to work and combat what this disease means to my sister and I. I armed myself with as much knowledge available. I had to face some fact and come to terms with where this disease was going to take us. I understood that this disease was terminal and would eventually take her life, but I refused to let it still love, honor or dignity.
My sister ended her struggle with the disease in the summer of 2015 but my fight for this disease is just warming up. I am an advocate for the caregiver and I developed tools to enable them to care with purpose and passion.
