PCOS is a common cause of infertility in women and it is found in as many as 5 to 10% of women. It is a condition that is caused by an imbalance of hormones in the body, and in fact, women with PCOS have too many androgen hormones present, and the estrogen can also be at too high of a level.
The ovaries of women with PCOS often contain several small cysts that vary in size from about 2mm to 6mm, but can sometimes be larger in size. The increased concentration of estrogen hormone in women with PCOS does increase the risk of problems with the endometrium. People with PCOS are often overweight and may have amenorrhea or very irregular periods.
The elevated androgen levels increase the risk of obesity and thus also metabolic syndrome. This is the syndrome associated with a higher than normal risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Heart disease risk increases because the androgen hormones are linked to high cholesterol and high blood pressure, two risk factors for cardiovascular problems. Researchers have found that women with PCOS also have a higher risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
The effect of PCOS on hair
The androgen hormones also increase the development of body hair (hirsutism) but also often cause hair loss from the head.Since PCOS has so many negative consequences, it is a good idea to seek treatment as soon as possible.
Hair loss from the scalp is often a source of embarrassment and shame for a woman. There are many options though, for treating thinning hair and bald spots on the scalp.
Prescription medication such as minoxidil (5%) has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of female pattern hair loss. This medication comes in the form of a foam that is applied to the head, and over time it may help hair regrowth.
