We often talk about deficiencies in our diet, but hemochromatosis is an inherited disorder in which people absorb extra iron from their diet, and there is no efficient way for the body to excrete iron. Eventually, the excess builds up in the liver, heart, pancreas, pituitary and joints, and can cause organ failure over time.
